What is your Identity

James Clear the author of ‘Atomic habits’ sends a few quotes every Thursday to his subscribers. They are introspective simple reminders, encouragements, and suggestions to imbibe. He does not enforce anything, merely hints at good practices. Take them or leave is the person’s choice. The subtle power of weekly messages works like magic because by the time I digest one week’s message and as the message fades into the background, some equally potent food for thought quotes makes their way into my inbox.

Discipline has been the bane of existence. In comparison to everyone near and dear to me, I do fairly well as I am apparently the most disciplined amongst us. I am never able to live up to my own expectations though. The few things that I truly want to pursue and wish as part of my daily life, those very activities I sacrifice when other tasks weigh upon me .

These quotes have helped me stick to the discipline. They reiterate to me and prod me to look within and be responsible for my choices. Strangely, they always have a message for me, a solution I have been seeking appears in those quotes. I was berating myself the last few months about the efforts I put in and yet I don’t get the results or the acknowledgement I seek.

Last week’s quotes were:

"Goals are for people who care about winning once. Systems are for people who care about winning repeatedly."

"Work hard. If results depend on effort, then you will carry yourself far. If results depend on effort and luck, then you will have done what you can to influence the outcome. And if results depend on luck alone, then the outcome is random, but you will have won the battle with yourself."

"One version of confidence is: I've got this figured out. Another version is: I can figure this out. The first is arrogant and close-minded. The second is humble and open-minded. Be humble about what you know, but confident about what you can learn."

I was encouraged reading the first one and felt peace reading the last one. I have the burning desire to make this a part of my life, and I will work hard, remain humble and continue to learn from my mistakes. Discipline is part of the lifelong learning.
