Some interesting ways of NVC expression😊An enriching way of appreciating or expressing our gratitude to the other.
Appreciation and criticism, both have influenced and played a huge role in shaping my persona. I get compliments for my dress twice and I am very inclined to wear it whenever possible in the hope of more compliments. Similarly, whenever I give any presentation and people come up to me and say, ‘you were brilliant’ or ‘that was wonderful’ I felt my chest swell with pride. I never dwelt on what was good about the presentation or what about my presenting was worthy of the adjectives.
The dress does not appeal to everyone, and the presentation also has different feedback with different audience. Using OFN to appreciate or express gratitude lends clarity, explains the reason for the expression of gratitude or appreciation.
When Marshal Rosenberg received a compliment, he always requested an elaboration. What about the workshop helped, or added value was his ask.
I am going to appreciate myself the OFN way for the compliment I received after a workshop, “You are brilliant”. We don’t need to make a request, when we are expressing our gratitude, so we will use only the first three tools, OFN.
Observation: Today is the third day of the workshop and I have learnt new things on all the three days. Feelings: I feel elated that I am now able to work towards fulfilling my (Needs) need for honest communication and always keeping the connection alive. You have taught me a new language which helps me be aware of my feelings and needs. Your workshop has helped me work towards fulfilling personal and work relationships. I wanted to say thank you and express my gratitude.
The above expression helps the recipient understand what exactly helped the other person, and which parts of the workshop were relatable to him/ her. Many other points may have touched different attendees, yet we all seem to sum it up with words like, brilliant, great, awesome, or wow, which offer no insights to the recipient.
Try the NVC expression of gratitude and feel the difference😊
