I hear a lot of skepticism when I broach the subject of integrative medicine or alternative therapies. The present generation has little or no faith in anything which is not backed by mountainous research and proof. Also, the impatience for quick results makes them scurry away from any of the traditional treatments like Ayurveda or Unani medicine.
Integrative medicine encompasses a host of healing methods which are continuously being researched. The investors are scarce; hence the funding is sadly limited. This inhibits research on a grand scale and without advertising, marketing and backing of the big pharmas’, integrative medicine will be in the shadows of Allopathy for a long time to come. That does not reduce its efficacy though and nor should it discourage the curious mind to probe and experiment with these alternative healing methods.
Unlike allopathic medicine which focuses only on the physical ailment, integrative medicine digs deeper and looks at the person holistically. Physical symptoms are the result of some underlying persisting malaise which remains undiagnosed for long in Allopathic way of treatment. Integrative medicine aims at doing RCA (root cause analysis) and then suggests a mode of therapy which is best suited, holistically. This involves interaction with the patient, getting to know the person and looking beyond the presenting issue. Evidently, this is time consuming, and requires patience, willingness to know oneself with honesty. Who in this day of hurry and haste has the time for introspection and self-reflection?
Our disregard for integrative medicine and fascination for allopathic medicine reflects the psychology of our generation. The inclination to dig deep is lacking. We are happy with instant remedies, quick fixes and want to be rid of the ailment as easily and quickly as possible.
I personally have benefited from Reiki, Homeopathy, Yoga, and Bach Remedies. And so, I thought it pertinent to exhort an attitude of curiosity for this wonderful branch of healing, which deserves more than a cursory glance. I am not hoping for a visit to the practitioner. I am only requesting that we have the wisdom to wonder, not shrug-off every therapy or treatment which is not allopathic.
