Guru Poornima is celebrated with utmost reverence by Hindus and Buddhist honoring their teachers, mentors and spiritual guides.
Guru is incomplete without a disciple, and similarly there is no disciple without a Guru. One completes the other. And the connection between the two paves way for their spiritual evolution, and their onward journey.
This year I was able to join the special meditation conducted by my Spiritual Master, and in his talk He offered a new perspective. A new way to live this auspicious day and build on it a bit at a time, every day.
I thought of sharing a few interesting Gur Disciple stories and hopefully the reader can benefit in a small way😊
Faith and Trust
One day, Guru Nanakji called his disciple and asked him to build a platform. The disciple obeyed his Guru’s command and built a platform. Guru Nanak saw the platform and ordered his disciple to demolish that platform.
In this way, Guru Nanak asked his disciple to build and demolish the platform over and over again. His disciple also diligently built and demolished the platform again and again according to the Guru’s orders.
When Guru Nanak’s son saw this, he got very angry. His son asked the disciple, “My father is repeatedly getting the platform built and is also asking you to demolish it. Are you not getting angry?”
The disciple replied, “What do I have to do with the platform. I am following Gurudev’s order, and to follow Gurudev’s order is my sadhana”.
The words of the guru are not open to dissection or postmortem. His wish is the disciples’ command and needs to be adhered to, with acceptance and joy. I learnt this lesson with difficulty and lot of resistance. Luckily, it did sink into me that my intellect is not equipped to fathom the deeper meaning of my Guru’s words. The pearls of wisdom were from His vision and foresight, and I lacked both! Surrendering to His will is by choice, and it is for my own good.
