Affirmations – Do they work?

My master’s often repeats this phrase, “Fake it till you make it” and this phrase used to confound me as I was very bad at faking. How do I fake something that I am not convinced about? Why would I believe something has already happened when something contradictory is staring at me and reminding me of the reality?

It was after I started practicing NVC in tandem with atomic habits, I became more comfortable with the phrase. Both, NVC and James Clear using different vocabulary convey the same message. If the goal is clear and you know where you are, and where you need to be, then pretend you are already there! Believe in this pretence and see the miracle happen.

I was not able to play this pretend game because I lacked conviction in my goal, I was still unaware or confused about where I was, and where I wanted to be. My affirmations were as weak as my convictions, and the seed of doubt dug itself deeper because my affirmations did not fructify.

For arguments sake, I ask this of all the non-believers in affirmations: when someone compliments you, does it give you a morale boost? Similarly, when someone criticizes you does it not gnaw at you? And if a singular compliment or criticism is repeated uncomfortably too often, does it not subconsciously become a part of your belief system? If someone else’s words can surreptitiously make their way into our personality and cement themselves, why don’t we believe in what we say to ourselves, for our own wellbeing and upliftment? Why do we lack the faith that the very same compliments (positive affirmations) wont work or they are all hocus pocus?

I urge the readers to ponder over the above. For anyone who is like me😊 and has faith in the power of affirmations, I recommend my favourite reiki practitioner and healer, Rachael’s youtube videos. She has affirmations for different reasons, and you can pick as per your need/ choice.

The key thing to remember with affirmations is, have faith in them, and in yourself. Also, for an affirmation to become a reality, visualize your future self. Use all the five senses, vision, auditory, olfactory, taste and touch actively and consciously work towards making it a reality. Like Master often says, ‘Fake it (reaffirm it) till you make it’.

The link to Rachael’s videos for the interested readers. I find them very helpful.
